The Oregonian
Lawmakers are facing a steep drop in projected revenues (“Oregon’s economic outlook sours, leaving state lawmakers with millions less to spend than previously expected,” May 14). Oregon’s budget shortfall demands smart choices – not sweeping cuts. Now is the time for lawmakers to invest in what delivers the strongest long-term return. That means supporting small businesses, especially those led by entrepreneurs historically excluded from public funding and opportunity.
During the 2008 recession, we saw what happens when small businesses – particularly those owned by people of color – are left without support: closures, job losses and a slower, more unequal recovery. We can’t afford to repeat that mistake.
That’s why the Community Economic Coalition Hub matters. This shovel-ready, community-led project offers technical support from culturally responsive advisors, shared workspace to lower startup costs and in-person access to tools that open doors to public contracts.
These services are critical as inflation and federal tariffs strain margins. Oregon’s small business owners need centralized, reliable support to stay afloat and grow.
The CEC Hub isn’t just for Portland – it’s a scalable model that can bring long-term economic benefit to communities across the state. When small businesses thrive, local dollars circulate longer, job opportunities expand and our economy becomes more resilient.
Oregon’s long-term economic health hinges on the strength of its small businesses. Investing in them now is how the Legislature can secure a more resilient, equitable and prosperous future—for every Oregonian.
